Our Curriculum
The knowledge, thinking strategies, and study skills gained from the three core areas allow graduates of GHIC to apply for a variety of professional courses and prepare them for further education should they choose to attend a university in East Africa or anywhere else worldwide. The three main areas are as follows:
- Languages
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
- Humanities
In addition to the three core areas, students also receive ample opportunity to train and develop in other courses, while community involvement serves the double purpose of empowering our young students with a sense of duty and responsibility and keeping our school and community clean and united. Finally, sports and extra-curricular clubs and events ensure a well-rounded student body that harvests the fruits of many labors and develops their creativity and individual personalities and mindsets through music, art, drama and technology.
1. Languages.
Linguistic education is a key component of the curriculum at GHIC. Our focus on the English language dictates that all students have a firm grasp of grammar, vocabulary, dictation, composition, and literature. All subjects are instructed exclusively in English. Students may be given the opportunity to study French and Kirundi. Graduates of GHIC will be able to correspond effectively with the vast majority of the diverse global community.
2. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
Our founding principles dictate that our curriculum prepares students for the future. For this reason, the pure sciences, which are physics, chemistry, and biology are part of the required core curriculum. These are offered at the Senior – high school level. A strong grasp and understanding of the physical and natural processes of the world around us allows our students to anticipate, innovate, and adapt in a changing world. At middle – high school levels (grades 9 and 10), the students take Integrated Science which combines the three natural sciences. The junior-high school students (grades 7 and 8) take General Science which lays a foundation for advanced sciences.
Communication determines relationships, while technology is our future – and GHIC students are the foundation of the future of East Africa and beyond. It is only natural then, to focus heavily on communications and technology and the skills necessary to utilize and manipulate the tool of modern communication and information sharing. Graduates from GHIC gain great experience with diverse communications, computers, audio/visual media, and the internet. We expect our students to be catalysts of global modernization.
Engineering is a key component of the STEM field, hence the need to encourage its uptake among the learners through strategies such as introducing culturally sensitive and inclusive teaching strategies which could enhance student engagement and learning, developing broader mentorship schemes guide to support them, adopting hands-on learning experiences to enhance greater interest and engagement, raising awareness of biases, stereotypes, and the need for inclusive learning environments as well as involving parents and families to provide additional support and encouragement for students. This initiative plays a key role in putting engineering into perspective, as a constituent of the broader STEM field.
Mathematics has been a hearth of knowledge since before the time of the ancient Greeks, and today is no different. Students are able to satisfy and surpass regional standards of mathematical proficiency. Understanding and applying mathematics are essential abilities, and our graduates are well prepared for tasks involving them. During the six -year course, students study all the sub-sets of mathematics, including but not limited to; Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus, Statistics, Probability.
3. Humanities.
With strong focus on the STEM disciplines, it may be easy for students to forget other aspects of a holistic education. Humanities, including History& Government, Geography, Global Perspective Studies, Christian Religious Education, Business studies, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Art & Design, Psychology, and Music, are critical for understanding patterns of human behavior, critical thinking, political and governmental structures, historical trends and conflicts, the processes and mechanisms of the Earth and our environment, and the consideration of the human condition and our place in the world.
Amongst the elements of the well-balanced education students receive at Green Hills International College are the arts. Fundamental to the human condition is the expression of each individual’s own imagination, emotions, ideals, and will. Music and arts taught at our school foster a sense of cultural belonging and pride as well as serving as a nurturing factor, encouraging students to develop and embrace their creativity.
Physical education strives to provide a sound program that reaches the student in a physical, mental and spiritual manner. Of greatest importance is the development of individual abilities as well as students’ participation. While participating in physical education students will demonstrate development in the psychomotor, cognitive and effective domains as they pertain to a variety of activities and sport.
In order to raise young leaders, we edify students through inspired direction. Our students are exposed to an increased focus on leadership education by being given opportunities to participate in school leadership roles as well as become active in the community around us. GHIC seeks to develop morally upright learners who shall serve as societal moral backbones and motivating forces. Religious engagements enrich and grow the spiritual life and understanding of students. These engagements expand the foundation of good and effective Leadership by teaching strong morals, values, and beliefs.
As students progress through the GHIC program, they receive increasing freedom in regards to their academic future. Beginning in year eleven, students are allowed certain choices in their course load, taking classes that differ from our standard core, called “Electives.” Through this process students may focus on various scholastic doctrines tailored to their interests, abilities &/or professional goals. Electives include Economics, Business Studies, Geography, History, Biology, Physics, CRE, Psychology, ICT and Art.
